Malawi is a beautiful and friendly country. It is 3 times as large as the Netherlands, bordering Mozambique in the East and South, Zambia in the West and Tanzania in the North. 30% of the territory is occupied by the heavenly Lake Malawi, 500 km in length. Large parts of the country are located relatively high above sea level and as the result the climate is often pleasant. However, in the South where the Shire river debouches into the Zambesi, it is swampy and scorching hot.
The country has 13 million inhabitants (of which 49,2% are children below the age of 15), which makes it one of the most densely populated and poorest countries of Africa. Malawians are a friendly people. As a Caucasian foreigner you can move through city and country easily and safely throughout the day. The main languages are English and Chichewa. The most important religions are Christianity and Islam.
Malawi is dependent mostly on agriculture. Corn is the primary source of food, besides groundnuts, cassava, rise, potatoes, bananas and fish.
Recently, Malawi has been tortured by large floods and heavy rainfall. The consequences are horrible. Large amounts of deaths, destructions and loss of the harvest. At this moment, the harvest is likely to fail again, this time because of draught. As a result, there is large famine in Malawi at this moment.
